# Memory: what Piste remembers and who sees it

> Piste keeps one shared memory per workspace: short facts about your business that every conversation reads. Learn how things are saved, edited and removed.

Source: https://www.usepiste.com/docs/memory

Piste's memory is one short document of facts about your business, such as your suppliers, policies and how you like things done. Your conversations with Piste and its automation runs read it, everyone who talks to Piste shares it, and it holds about 4,000 characters. The owner reads and corrects it on the Memory page in the web app.

## What does Piste remember?

Piste saves durable facts that will help in later conversations:

- the store and the brand, products and pricing
- suppliers, customers and policies
- team roles, goals, and decisions with their reasons
- how you'd like Piste to work, and what you want in a report

Each entry is one short line. Memory keeps only the text: no source, no date and no record of which conversation it came from. Piste treats what it remembers as facts people told it, not as instructions, and checks anything critical with you before acting on it.

Piste never saves passwords, API keys, access tokens, payment or bank details, private keys, or verification and one-time codes, even when asked.

> **Shared with everyone**
> Everyone's conversations with Piste read the same memory, so Piste can draw on any entry when anyone talks to it. Don't keep anything in memory that your team shouldn't read.

## How does Piste save something?

There are three ways an entry gets into memory:

| How | Who | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Tell Piste in a conversation | Anyone who talks to Piste, on the web, in Slack or over iMessage | Piste saves the fact and tells you it did. No approval is needed. |
| `Remember this` on a Slack message | Any full member of your Slack workspace | Piste saves the message's own words, quoted and attributed, and shows you privately "Saved to the workspace's memory:" with an `Undo` button. |
| `Add` on the Memory page | The workspace owner | The entry is added as you typed it. |

For example, say "Remember that our supplier needs orders by Thursday noon", or "Leave gift cards out of the morning briefing". The second is a preference about a report: Piste saves it as a memory rather than rewriting the automation, and every run reads memory first.

An entry saved with [Remember this](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/slack/shortcuts) reads like `Slack message from Sam in #ops, 6 Oct 2026: “…”`. It keeps messages of up to 300 characters; for a longer message, mention Piste and say "remember that …" with the fact in a sentence. Only the person who saved it, or the workspace owner, can press `Undo`.

## What is never saved?

Some conversations read memory but can't add to it or remove from it, so a message nobody chose to save never ends up in every later conversation.

| Where | Reads memory | Saves or removes |
|---|---|---|
| Your conversations with Piste, and automation runs | Yes | Yes |
| A conversation started with Ask Piste about this or Watch for this on a Slack message | Yes | No |
| A dry run (Try it now), including a playbook's previews | Yes | No |
| An unasked answer in a [listening channel](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/slack/channels) | Yes | No |
| An [agency room](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/agency-rooms) | No | No |

To keep the words of someone else's message, use `Remember this` on it: Piste saves exactly the words you chose.

## Who can see and change memory?

The owner reads and edits memory on the web. Open **Memory** in the small links at the foot of the sidebar, with Connections, Apps, Skills and Activity ([app.usepiste.com/settings/memory](https://app.usepiste.com/settings/memory)). The page lists What the agent remembers:

- `Add` an entry with the box at the top.
- Edit an entry with its pencil button, then press `Save`.
- Delete an entry with its bin button, then confirm with `Delete`.

Anyone who talks to Piste can ask it to save or remove an entry in a conversation. Only the owner can change memory on the Memory page.

## How do I remove something from memory?

### 1. Open Memory

Open **Memory** at the foot of the sidebar. The entries are listed under What the agent remembers.

### 2. Press the bin button on the entry

The dialog "Delete this memory?" shows the entry and says Piste won't know it any more, unless it learns it again.

### 3. Press Delete

The entry is gone from every conversation from the next message.

You can also ask Piste in a conversation, for example "Forget what I said about the Thursday cut-off". Piste tells you when it removes an entry. There's no way to clear everything at once: remove entries one by one.

## How much can memory hold?

Memory holds about 4,000 characters in all, and one entry can be up to about 2,000. When a new entry won't fit, it's refused rather than pushing an older one out, with "That doesn't fit. Memory holds a few thousand characters in all, and one entry up to about 2,000. Remove something older, or shorten it." Saving text that's already in memory adds nothing. Entries stay until someone removes them.

## Memory or a skill?

Memory holds facts and preferences. A [skill](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/skills) holds a procedure for a recurring task.

| Put it in memory | Write a skill |
|---|---|
| "Our supplier is Northwind and needs 14 days." | How to build the Monday sales recap, step by step. |
| "We don't count gift cards in sales reports." | How to answer a wholesale enquiry. |
| "Ana runs fulfilment." | How to check a new product listing before it goes live. |

## Questions

### Is Piste's memory per person?

No. Each workspace has one memory, about the business rather than any one person, and everyone who talks to Piste in that workspace shares it.

### Can I see where a memory came from?

No. Memory keeps only the text of each entry, with no source or date. An entry saved with Remember this in Slack quotes who wrote the message, in which channel and on which day, because those words are part of the entry.

### How do I make Piste forget something?

The owner can delete the entry on the Memory page in the web app, or anyone can ask Piste in a conversation to remove it. There's no button to clear everything at once.

### Will Piste remember a password if I ask it to?

No. Piste never saves passwords, API keys, access tokens, payment or bank details, private keys, or verification and one-time codes, even when asked.

### Can my teammates add to Piste's memory?

Yes. Anyone who talks to Piste can ask it to remember something, and any full member of your Slack workspace can use Remember this on a message. Guests can't. Only the owner edits memory on the Memory page in the web app.
