# Sale rooms: a Slack channel for each sale

> A sale room is a Slack channel where Piste posts readiness before a sale, pacing three times a day while it runs, and one debrief the morning after.

A sale room is a public Slack channel for one sale, such as Black Friday weekend, a spring sale or a product drop. Piste posts there before the sale to say whether the store is ready, three times a day while it runs to say how it's pacing, and once the morning after to say how it went. Then it stops.

## What does a sale room need?

| You need | Why |
|---|---|
| Piste installed in [Slack](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/slack) | Piste creates the room as a public Slack channel. |
| A connected [Shopify store](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/shopify) with its sales reports | Every post reads the store's sales, stock and discount codes. |
| A [Google Ads account](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/google-ads-and-meta) (optional) | Only for the ads checks, which are in early access. |

Only the workspace owner opens a sale room.

## How do I open a sale room?

### 1. Ask Piste to get ready for the sale

In a conversation with Piste, on the web, in Slack or over iMessage, say something like "Get us ready for Black Friday" or "Open a room for our spring sale, 20 to 23 March". If you don't give dates, Piste uses the next Black Friday weekend, Friday to Monday.

### 2. Say what to compare it with

By default Piste compares the sale with the same sale a year before: last year's Black Friday weekend for Black Friday, otherwise the same weekdays a year earlier. You can give other dates instead, as long as they come before the sale and are the same number of days, or ask for no comparison.

### 3. Open the new channel

Piste creates the room's channel, invites you and posts a setup message saying what it will post and when. The first readiness post follows in a minute or two. The channel is named after the sale and its year, such as `#piste-black-friday-weekend-2026`, so last year's room keeps its own name.

### 4. Invite your team

Invite whoever should follow the sale. Anyone who's a full member of your Slack workspace can decide on the room's cards; guests can read but can't decide.

A sale is at most 14 days. Piste won't open a room for a sale that's already over or more than 365 days away, and an automation run can't open one. A workspace has one sale per first day, so asking again for the same sale returns its existing room. With [several stores](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/shopify/several-stores), Piste asks which store the sale is in.

If Slack won't let Piste create the channel, Piste says what to do: reinstall Slack if your install is from before Piste could create channels (nothing is lost), or ask a Slack admin to let apps create channels.

## What does Piste post, and when?

All times are in the store's time zone.

| Post | When | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Readiness | When the room opens, then every Monday at 9:00 until the sale | Stock, Codes and Ads |
| Pacing | 10:00, 14:00 and 18:00 on each day of the sale | Sales so far against the comparison, the codes in use, and best sellers that sold out or came back |
| Debrief | 9:00 the morning after the sale ends | How the sale went, stock-outs, codes, and the decisions taken in the room |

If the sale starts on or before the next Monday, the first post is the only readiness post. Every line in every post says where its numbers came from.

### Readiness

Readiness posts group their lines under Stock, Codes and Ads:

- **Stock.** Piste checks the stock of up to 10 best sellers, by net sales over the comparison, that sold at least 5 units then, and names each one with less on hand than it sold. Without a comparison, or when it had no sales, Piste uses the last 28 days' rate over the sale's days instead, and says a sale usually sells faster.
- **Codes.** Discount codes live during the sale that can be used together on the same order. Piste checks the first 50 live or scheduled codes.
- **Ads.** Google Shopping spend on products that are sold out or would run out during the sale. This part is in early access.

For a Standard Shopping ad group that advertises only sold-out products, the post can carry a card to pause it, and once the stock is back, a card to turn it on again. A readiness post proposes at most 3 pauses. Without Google Ads, the post says: "No Google Ads account is connected, so ads weren't checked. Meta's ads don't name products, so they aren't."

### Pacing

Each pacing post gives net sales and orders so far, and net sales as a percentage of the same complete hours of the comparison. It also gives the top 3 discount codes' share of orders, and any watched best seller found out of stock or back in stock since the last post. With no comparison, or none with sales, it gives the running total alone.

### Debrief

The debrief compares the whole sale with the comparison. It says which best sellers were out of stock and for about how long, as far as reads a few hours apart can tell, the top codes' share of orders, and the decisions taken on the room's cards and by whom. It ends: "That's the last post for this sale: this channel can be archived."

## Who can act on the room's cards?

Any full, active member of your Slack workspace can press a card's buttons in the room; guests and people from other organisations can't. The cards are [ad changes](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/approvals/ad-changes), so they follow the same rules as any other ad change, including Undo. See [Proposals and cards](https://www.usepiste.com/docs/approvals/proposals).

## What happens after the sale?

After the debrief, the room's automation pauses for good, so nothing keeps running. You'll see it on the Automations page as the sale's name followed by "room". Piste archives nothing: the channel stays until you archive it.

If the debrief can't read the sale's figures, Piste tries again the next morning, up to 3 mornings after the sale.

## Questions

### Who can open a sale room?

Only the workspace owner, by asking Piste in a conversation. An automation run can't open one.

### How long can a sale be?

Up to 14 days. A room can't be opened for a sale that has already ended, or for one more than a year away.

### What is a sale compared with?

By default, the same sale a year before. For Black Friday weekend that's last year's Black Friday weekend; for anything else, the same weekdays a year earlier. You can give other dates of the same length, or ask for no comparison.

### Who can press the buttons in a sale room?

Any full member of your Slack workspace. Guests in the channel can read the posts but can't decide.

### Does Piste archive the channel after the sale?

No. The debrief ends by saying the channel can be archived. Archiving it is up to you, and Piste posts nothing more there.

### Do I need Google Ads for a sale room?

No. Without Google Ads, the readiness posts check stock and discount codes and say that ads weren't checked.
