Decision log

The Activity page lists every decision about what Piste did, what it asked and who answered, and what it refused. The owner can download it as a CSV.

Updated

The decision log is Piste's record of every decision about what it did: what ran without asking and why, what it asked and who answered, and what it refused. The workspace owner reads it on the Activity page in the web app and can download it as a CSV.

Where do I find the decision log?

Open Activity from the small links at the foot of the web app's sidebar, under Connections, Apps, Skills and Memory, or go to https://app.usepiste.com/settings/activity. The page is headed Settings, then Activity, with the line: "Everything the agent did that needed a decision: what ran without asking and why, what it asked and who answered, and what it refused."

Only the workspace owner can open it. Activity isn't in anyone else's sidebar.

What does the Activity page show?

Decisions are listed newest first, 200 at a time. Show older pages back, and Back to the newest returns to the top. Times are in your workspace's time zone, which the page names above the list.

ColumnWhat it shows
WhenThe date and time of the decision
What the agent wanted to doThe step, such as a change's title, with "Requested by" and a name when someone asked for it
What happenedThe outcome as a dot and a word, with the reason underneath

Filter the list with the buttons above it: All, Ran without asking, Asked or Refused.

Piste gives one of these reasons when something ran without asking:

  • "it only changes things inside Piste, like an automation or a page for the workspace"
  • "it was judged to only read"
  • "it costs under the $0.50 the agent may spend on its own"
  • "it was judged a small change that's safe to make"

A teammate who uses Piste only through Slack has no name in Piste, so their decisions read "Approved by someone" or "Denied by someone", with no "Requested by" line.

Steps stopped in a dry run

The log records decisions. It never changes who may approve what.

How does a change follow-up's Keep it read?

Keep it on a change follow-up is recorded as declining the revert. So it reads "Denied by" the person's name, on a step named after the revert button and the change, such as "Revert to $48:" followed by the change's title. A Revert reads "Approved by" the person who pressed it.

How do I download the decision log as a CSV?

Choose a filter

On the Activity page, choose All, Ran without asking, Asked or Refused. The download follows the filter you have chosen.

Press Download CSV

Press Download CSV. It reads "Preparing…" while the file is made, then your browser downloads it. The button is disabled when the list is empty.

The file is named piste-activity.csv, or piste-activity-ran.csv, piste-activity-asked.csv or piste-activity-refused.csv for a filter. It holds the newest 5,000 decisions for that filter.

CSV columnWhat it holds
When (UTC)The time of the decision, in UTC
What the agent wanted to doThe step, as on the page
What happenedThe outcome, as on the page
WhyThe reason or detail shown under the outcome
WhereWhere it happened, as on the page
Requested byWho asked for it, if anyone
KindWhat made the call: app, mcp, paid-data, recommendation or tool
SourceWhich rule source decided it
RuleThe rule within that source

A cell that starts with =, +, - or @ is saved with an apostrophe in front, so opening the file in a spreadsheet never runs it as a formula.

Questions

Where do I see what Piste did without asking?
On the Activity page in the web app, linked at the foot of the sidebar. Choose Ran without asking to see only those, each with the reason it needed no approval.
Can I see who approved a change?
Yes. Each decision reads Approved by or Denied by with the person's name where Piste has one, and where it was taken, such as Slack or On a page.
Who can see the decision log?
Only the workspace owner. Activity isn't in anyone else's sidebar, and the page doesn't open for them.
How much of the log does the CSV include?
The newest 5,000 decisions for the filter you have chosen. The page itself shows 200 at a time, with Show older to page back.
Does the decision log change who can approve things?
No. It only records decisions. Who can approve what is set by the approval rules, not by the log.
