Connect
ChatGPT plan
Connect your workspace's ChatGPT plan so coder jobs, and all of Piste if you choose, run on it instead of Piste's own. Only the workspace owner can connect it.
You can connect your workspace's own ChatGPT plan to Piste. Coder jobs then run on it, using Codex on your plan's own limits, instead of on Piste, unless you've connected your own Claude plan, which jobs use first. If you also switch on Run the agent on this plan, Piste's conversations on every channel and its automations run on your plan too, and fall back to Piste whenever the plan can't answer.
What does connecting my ChatGPT plan change?
| Once your plan is connected | Runs on |
|---|---|
| Coder jobs | Your plan, with Codex, unless your Claude plan is connected too. They never fall back to Piste. |
| Conversations and automations | Piste, while Run the agent on this plan is off |
Conversations and automations, with Run the agent on this plan on | Your plan, and Piste whenever the plan can't answer |
The job page shows what each job ran on under "Ran on".
How do I connect my ChatGPT plan?
Connecting uses a one-time code that you approve on OpenAI's site.
Open the Connections page
Press Connections in the links at the foot of the sidebar. The ChatGPT card is under Jobs: "Run coder jobs, and the agent if you choose, on your ChatGPT plan instead of Piste's."
Press Connect ChatGPT
Press Connect ChatGPT. The card shows three steps and a code.
Open ChatGPT's sign-in page
Press Open ChatGPT, which also copies the code. You can instead go to auth.openai.com/codex/device on any device.
Enter the code
Enter the code shown on the card. It works for 15 minutes, and the card counts down. If OpenAI's page mentions Codex, that's expected: Piste runs your jobs with Codex.
Approve, then come back
Approve on OpenAI's page and come back to Piste. The card's state changes to "Connected", with your account, its plan and "Coder jobs run on your ChatGPT plan."
Only enter the code if you started connecting from Piste just now. If it runs out before you approve, the card says "That code expired before OpenAI approved it." Press Get a new code to start again.
Seeing "Enable device code authorization"?
OpenAI's page shows this when device code sign-in is turned off for your account. Open ChatGPT's security settings, turn on "Device code authorization for Codex", then come back and enter the code again, or get a new one. On a Business, Enterprise or Edu plan, a workspace admin turns this on in the workspace's permissions.
Connecting from Slack
Piste may offer to connect your plan in your Slack DM, and you can ask it to there. Its card drives the same sign-in: Connect ChatGPT, a code to enter on OpenAI's site, then I've approved it. The card then asks what to run on the plan: Everything or Only the coder's jobs. Only the owner can press its buttons, and the card only ever appears in the owner's own DM with Piste.
What does Run the agent on this plan do?
Run the agent on this plan is a switch on the connected ChatGPT card. When it's on, chat on every channel and automations use your plan too: the web app, Slack, iMessage and scheduled runs. That includes your team's conversations with Piste in Slack, since everyone in the workspace talks to the same Piste.
Agency rooms never run on your plan.
What happens when the plan can't answer?
When a step can't run on your plan, Piste runs that step on its own model instead, so the conversation keeps going. That covers your plan reaching its usage limit, a sign-in OpenAI no longer accepts, and OpenAI not answering.
| Situation | Conversations and automations | Coder jobs |
|---|---|---|
| The plan reaches its usage limit | Run on Piste until the limit resets. The card says "Plan limit reached. The agent runs on Piste until" the reset time. | The job fails: "Your ChatGPT plan hit its usage limit. Retry the job once it resets", or disconnect ChatGPT to run jobs on Piste. |
| Piste's sign-in expires or is signed out | Run on Piste until you reconnect | The job fails, and its error says to reconnect ChatGPT on the Connections page, then retry the job. |
Coder jobs never fall back to Piste: once a plan is connected, a job that hits a problem on it fails, and its error says what to do next.
When Piste's sign-in to ChatGPT has expired or was signed out, the card's state reads "Needs reconnecting", and Needs you shows "Your ChatGPT plan needs reconnecting". Press Reconnect to sign in again, or Disconnect to run jobs on Piste.
How does the plan affect usage limits?
Steps your plan answers are recorded but don't count against your workspace's usage, and a workspace whose agent runs on its plan isn't checked against a usage limit. A step that fell back to Piste counts like any other. While the plan is at its limit or needs reconnecting, the agent runs on Piste and the workspace's usage limits apply as usual. See Usage and billing.
How do I switch account or disconnect?
- Switch account: press
Switch accounton the card and approve a new code. Your current account stays connected until you approve the new one. - Disconnect: press
Disconnectand confirm. Coder jobs run on Piste again, or on your Claude plan if it's connected. A job running on your plan stops at its next step, unless it finishes first, and you can retry it on Piste.
Who can connect a ChatGPT plan?
Only the workspace owner can connect a ChatGPT plan, switch accounts, disconnect it, or turn Run the agent on this plan on or off, because one person's plan would answer everyone in the workspace. A workspace has at most one plan.
