Team and account
Team and roles
A Piste workspace has one owner, who signs in on the web. Your team uses Piste through Slack as light members, with no login and no invite needed.
A Piste workspace has one owner: the person who signed up on the web. Everyone else on your team uses Piste through Slack as a light member, with no Piste login of their own. There's no invite to send. Anyone who's a full member of your Slack workspace can talk to Piste once it's installed there.
Who is the owner?
The owner is the person who signed up at https://app.usepiste.com/sign-up. Signing up creates the workspace, and there's one workspace per owner. The owner is the only person who:
- signs in to the web app;
- connects or disconnects Shopify, Slack, iMessage, ad accounts, apps, MCP servers, data tools, and the Claude or ChatGPT plan jobs run on;
- creates, changes, pauses or deletes automations;
- starts jobs for the coder;
- writes skills, and edits memory on the web;
- reads the decision log on the Activity page.
When the owner adds Piste to Slack, their Slack account is linked to their Piste account, so Piste knows them in Slack too.
What is a light member?
A light member is someone in your Slack workspace who uses Piste. They have no Piste login and reach Piste only through Slack. Someone becomes a light member the first time they:
- send Piste a direct message, mention it, or reply in a thread it's in;
- write in a private channel Piste is in, where it answers without a mention;
- reply under an automation's post in a channel;
- press a card under an automation's post, or
Keep me posted; - use a message shortcut or
/piste.
Only a full, active member of the Slack workspace where Piste is installed can join. These people can't:
| Who | What happens |
|---|---|
| A guest, multi-channel or single-channel | Refused, with a private reply if they addressed Piste |
| A deactivated account | Refused |
| A bot | Refused |
| Someone from another organisation, in a shared channel | Refused. Piste doesn't answer in shared channels at all, except an agency room. |
A refused person who addressed Piste is told privately: "Piste is for this workspace's members. To get your own, start at https://app.usepiste.com/sign-up".
How do I add my team?
Add Piste to Slack
As the owner, open the Connections page from the small links at the foot of the sidebar, press Add to Slack under Channels, and approve the app. See Slack.
Invite people to Piste's channels
An automation Piste starts for you in Slack gets its own public channel, such as #piste-changes, and any automation can post in a channel Piste is in. Invite the people who should see the posts and decide on their cards. See Channels.
Ask them to talk to Piste
Teammates send Piste a direct message or mention @Piste in a channel it's in. They become light members on their first message.
To split automations by part of the business, the owner can ask Piste to "set this up for my team". Piste sends the owner a "Who should see what?" card that puts each team's automations in its own channel. See Channels.
Can a teammate sign in to the web app?
No. Only the owner signs in on the web. If someone else signs up at https://app.usepiste.com/sign-up, they get a new, separate workspace of their own, with no access to yours. There's no team page, and no way to invite a second person to the web app.
Your team decides on automations' changes from their cards in Slack instead. iMessage is the owner's alone too: only the owner can connect a number.

Every full member of your Slack workspace can ask Piste about your store's sales, orders and stock. Their conversations share the workspace's one memory. Your connected apps, such as Gmail, are only ever used in your own conversations and automations.
Who can approve a change?
- In a conversation: the owner, or the person who started that conversation. Someone else can't approve in a thread they didn't start.
- A card under an automation's post: any full member of the Slack workspace, checked with Slack on every press. A few kinds are the owner's wherever they are: switching on a pre-order, creating a Gmail draft, and a standing approval Early access. Releasing a held order is for the person who held it, or the owner.
- A card raised in a conversation: the owner alone.
On the web, only the owner signs in, so Needs you is the owner's. See Approvals.
How does someone's access end?
Piste has no screen to list or remove light members. What Piste checks with Slack:
- Every press, every time. Card presses,
Keep me posted, message shortcuts and/pisteare checked with Slack each time. Someone deactivated in Slack, made a guest, or from another organisation can't use them. - Messages only the first time. Slack is asked about someone on their first message. A light member Slack later makes a guest can still message Piste.
- Disconnecting Slack on the Connections page, or removing the app in Slack, removes the installation and every person's Slack link to Piste at once.
