Connect

Connected apps

The workspace owner connects apps like Gmail, Notion and Klaviyo on the Apps page. Piste uses their read tools freely and asks before it sends or changes anything.

Updated

Connected apps are the tools you run the business in, such as Gmail, Notion or Klaviyo. The workspace owner connects each one on the Apps page (Apps, in the links at the foot of the sidebar), and Piste can then use it in the owner's conversations and automations. Piste uses an app's read-only tools without asking, and asks before anything that would send or change something.

Which apps can I connect?

The Apps page suggests six apps to start with. To find any other, type at least three letters into "Search apps".

AppWhat the suggestion says
GmailRead and draft replies to customer and supplier email.
Google DriveFind line sheets, invoices and briefs.
NotionRead and update your launch plans and SOPs.
Google SheetsKeep the reorder sheet in step with Shopify.
KlaviyoSee how each campaign sold, and draft the next one.
GorgiasSummarise support tickets by product.

Each app is one sign-in per workspace. Sign-ins go through Composio, the service that holds them.

How do I connect an app?

Open the Apps page

Press Apps in the links at the foot of the sidebar. Under "Add an app", find the app in the list or search for it.

Press Connect

Press Connect beside the app. Piste opens the app's sign-in page.

Sign in and allow access

Sign in to the app and allow access. You come back to the Apps page, which says the app "is connected. Ask the agent to use it." The app now appears under Connected.

You can also ask Piste in a conversation, for example "connect Gmail". Piste asks you to sign in and carries on once you have: in the web app, a card says the app "needs you to sign in", with a Sign in to <app> button. The app's tools are available from your next message.

What can Piste do in a connected app?

It depends on whether you're in the conversation.

WhereRead-only toolsAnything that sends or changes something
Your conversation with PisteRun without askingWaits for your approval in the conversation
An automation runRunRefused: "an automation run can't send or change anything there, since nobody is there to approve it"

Composio marks which of an app's tools are read-only. Approvals and refusals are recorded in the decision log. An app's read-only calls aren't.

What can Piste propose in an app?

An automation run can't act in an app, but Piste can propose an action on a card, from a short list that Piste keeps in its code. Today the list has two actions: creating a Gmail draft, and deleting that draft again. Nothing on the list sends anything.

The one use so far is the supplier reorder draft: a reorder email to your supplier for one product variant and a quantity, as a draft in your Gmail. Piste can propose it in your automations' runs, or when you ask in your own Slack conversation with Piste, and only while Gmail is connected. Piste writes the whole email from a fixed template and your store's facts (the product, the variant, its SKU, the quantity and your store's name), asking the supplier to confirm the price and when it could ship. It addresses the email only to the supplier address you gave Piste.

To give Piste your supplier's address, tell it in a conversation, for example "our supplier's email is orders@example.com", and approve saving it. Only the owner can, and never from an automation run. Without an address, the card asks for one and has no button. If you change or forget the address after a card was raised, pressing Create the draft on that card creates nothing: ask for the draft again.

The Gmail draft hasn't yet been run against a real mailbox.

Who can use connected apps?

Only the workspace owner connects, reconnects or disconnects an app, on the Apps page or by asking Piste.

Only the owner's own conversations and automations can use the apps, because each app is signed in with the owner's account. A teammate talking to Piste in Slack, or any light member, can't read your mailbox or drive through Piste.

How do I reconnect or disconnect an app?

An app whose sign-in expired shows "Needs reconnecting". Press Reconnect beside it and sign in again. An app shows "Sign-in not finished" when its sign-in didn't complete.

To remove an app, press Disconnect beside it and confirm. Piste loses access to the app, and Composio forgets the sign-in. You can connect it again at any time.

Questions

Can Piste send email from my Gmail?
Only in your own conversation with Piste, and only after you approve that exact call. An automation run can never send. It can only propose a Gmail draft, which you create from its card and which sends nothing.
Can my team use my connected apps through Piste?
No. Connected apps are the owner's own accounts, so only the owner's conversations and automations can use them. A teammate talking to Piste in Slack can't reach them.
Which apps can I connect to Piste?
The Apps page suggests Gmail, Google Drive, Notion, Google Sheets, Klaviyo and Gorgias. Type at least three letters in "Search apps" to find others.
Can an automation change things in my apps?
No. An automation run can use an app's read-only tools, but it can't send or change anything. The only thing a run can propose is a Gmail draft, on a card the owner decides.
What happens when I disconnect an app?
Piste loses access to the app, and its sign-in is deleted. You can connect it again at any time.
